How To Do An Eyelash Extension Consultation
Eyelash extension consultations are a really great way to ensure your appointments go as smoothly as possible, for you and the client. Our industry is growing and evolving daily, so your client will most likely have an understanding of lashes but it is a great opportunity to answer questions and set expectations!
Are you wondering: What questions should I ask, what do I need, what should I listen for? We will answer all of these and more below.
When prepping for a consultation, be sure your workspace is presented as it would be the day of the appointment. This is your client's first impression of you and your studio or salon. Additionally, have photos ready of your work so the potential client can see your work and your style.
During the eyelash extension consultation, consider asking these questions:
- Have you ever had eyelash extensions before?
- What was your experience with them? Reactions? Likes/dislikes?
- How much makeup do you wear each day?
- Do you have any allergies or sensitivity? (previous eye infections, eye disease, allergic to latex, adhesive, etc.)
- Do you have an active lifestyle?
- Do you wear glasses?
- Do you wear contacts?
- Have you received any permanent makeup or undergone an eye surgery in the past 6-8 weeks?
- Do you have any inspiration pictures?
Why do we need to know these details?
- If your client says yes, ask:
- What did they like or dislike about their previous service?
- What would they like to change?
- If your client answered no, guide them through the lash procedure.
- Determining the amount of makeup worn can help when choosing the lash style and how ‘dramatic’ you want them to be.
- Certain eye makeup products, such as liquid eyeliners, have carbon black in them. If the client expresses they have had allergies to beauty products in the past, it may impact your choice of adhesive. This can also be your opportunity to consider doing a patch test on the client.
- If your client wears glasses regularly, you may recommend a certain curl to avoid hitting the lenses.
- If they wear contacts, it’s recommended to remove them before the service starts so they do not dry out due to the eyes being closed for an extended period of time.
- Permanent makeup can create a temporary open wound around the eye area. If lash extensions are placed on the lashes before the area is fully healed, it can expose the open wound to adhesive fumes and increase the risk of infection or irritation.
- Using inspiration “inspo” photos is one of the most important parts of a consultation. We suggest showing photos of your work from your social media, or phone, when the client is deciding on the style they like. Pinterest is great for inspo pics, too, however you run the risk of unrealistic expectations if your client chooses a style or curl you don’t offer. It’s best if they see your work as the artist!
Contraindication and Special Care
Caution your clients prior to application & do not carry out lash application and do not schedule if client has:
- Weak eyelashes
- Positive reaction to patch test (complete 48 hours before application)
- Styes
- Cysts
- Blepharitis
- Cuts, abrasions, and/or swelling around the eyes
- Chemotherapy
- Eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pinkeye)
- Skin disorder around the eyes
- Inflammation of or around the eyes
- Recent operations around the eyes, head, or face
- Scar tissue around the eyes
- Watery eyes
- Hypersensitive skin
- Eye alopecia
- Bells palsy or any conditions that make closing of the eye difficult
Clients must wait 48 hours before treatment:
- Recent eyelash service that involves chemicals such as lash tinting or perming.

Check your clients lashes. Are they healthy and in good condition to have lashes applied?
Determine if the client wants to commit to lashes for an extended period of time, or are the lashes for a special event/occasion/holiday?
When wrapping up the eyelash extension consultation, you can ask the client if they would like to move forward with scheduling the lash appointment.
If they say yes:
- This is a great time to secure their appointment on your calendar
- Have them pay their appointment deposit, if you require one
- Fill out consent forms in advance to maximize appointment time
- Review how to prep for the appointment so that on the day of they arrive prepared and on time
If they say they need to consider and will get back to you:
- Share your booking link and discuss upcoming availability so they have an idea of times and dates
- Kindly follow-up in 2-3 days to express you want their business and appreciate them choosing you to do their lashes.
- “Hey! It was great to meet you on _______. I just wanted to follow up, and if you have any additional questions please let me know. I hope to see you soon for some beautiful lashes!”
