What Is A Wax Specialist Or Waxologist?

A waxologist, wax specialist, or wax technician are professionals in the beauty industry who provide waxing or other hair removal services. In the US specifically, requirements will vary by state. However, the vast majority of states do require an esthetician or cosmetologist license to wax.

Is Becoming A Wax Specialist A Good Fit For Me?

Not everyone finds the idea of waxing appealing — it can be a little messy, tricky to perfect, and intimate (depending on the specific services you provide).

First, you’ll need to research and learn all about waxing. Take the time to truly understand how the waxing process works and which products are best for individual clients. If possible, you might find that talking to others in the industry can help you develop a deeper understanding of the process and if it seems like something you would enjoy.

Another angle to consider is that professional waxologists need to be able to create a relaxing and comfortable space for their clients. Waxing can be somewhat uncomfortable, both physically and mentally, especially for first-time clients. You should be able to build strong rapport with your clients, helping them feel comfortable in your work environment and with you as an individual.

How To Become A Waxologist

Not scared off yet? Then let’s get into how you can actually get wax specialist jobs in the US.

For the most part, all states require some form of licensure. This might be a cosmetology or esthetician license, but waxing is not a service that just anyone can offer without the proper education and waxologist training.

This does vary state by state, so you’ll need to look at your specific state requirements. Let’s say that you’re looking to offer waxing services in the state of Nevada. According to the Nevada State Board of Cosmetology, waxing is covered under both Esthetics and Cosmetology. Either license would then allow you to begin your waxing career!

Let’s look at another example. If you were starting out in New York, you wouldn’t actually need an esthetician or cosmetologist license. New York offers a specific waxing license that covers all forms of hair removal (besides electrology) for 4 years. This is outside of a traditional beauty school, and requires passing a 75 hour course and the New York written exam.

As you can see from just these two examples, requirements vary quite a bit. Be sure to look at your state’s specific rules and regulations!
